Things I liked about Internet Explorer 8

This is all about my first experience with IE 8. Overall I enjoyed my experience.

1] Color Differentiation in URL Link – First thing I noticed was my page URL, which does not appear like earlier. In IE 8 the URL link is being displayed in two colors, the root site name only in darker tone whereas the standard prefixes (i.e. http: //www.) and the further page link information are in lighter shade, in gray color. For me it works because, while looking at URL, root site is the thing which should stand out from rest of the information. It helps to easily recollect site name.

2] Grouping of Related Tabs – This is an interesting thing, when working with multiple tabs with multiple context, at time you don’t remember which tabs are of related information. IN IE 8, they have come up with nice grouping of related tabs. First thing is that when you open a new tab from your current page, it will always be placed next to your adjacent tab so having proximity. Second thing is that all tabs originated from single page or form one another are displayed with similar and distinct tab colors hence forming a group.

3] Multiple Tabs handling – I also liked the placement and approach of handling multiple tabs. When we open multiple tabs, when all could not feet into the available screen area we got a tab scroll. This allows us to do tab scroll and see the hidden tab pages. In IE 8, apart from arrow indicator (« and »), combined list of all tabs is displayed as a drop down (tab list) in the left side of the screen. With click on the drop arrow, it displays all tabs list. Alongside it is the Quick Tabs icon, which allows you to open all opened tab pages in a new page as thumbnail icon, from where you can pick and open any tab. Quick tabs toggles over your current page view. This is handy from user’s view as it gives the option to pick from the list or select from quick tab thumbnails.

4] In Private Browsing – This is also a nice new feature included in IE 8. On selection, IE 8 opens a new browser window with IN Private Setting, in this setting whatever site you visit; IE does not store your browsing session data (i.e. cookies, temp internet files, history and other forms data). Many a times we all tend to browse in confidential manner, earlier in that cases, we need to user Tools – Internet options and from there we used to delete all private data. In Private browsing is made this easier now. For all confidential browsing you can use In Private Browsing Mode without worrying about deleting your browsing session data.

5] Compatibility View – Another nice feature is compatibility view. Some sites are designed for earlier version of browser and may not look good in the current version. IE 8 is having a Compatibility View option which allows displaying the site in compatible mode in case there is any compatibility issue. In the below picture you can see that in first image, the login area moved to right side of the page due to compatibility issue, which is actually placed in the center. With compatibility view in IE 8, the page can be displayed properly as displayed in next image.

6] Smart Screen Filter – Security wise IE 8 is having Smart Screen Filter, which warns if the visiting website is appear fake or harmful for your computer.

7] Map Accelerator – By selecting any address in your page and using Map Accelerator, it displays a map of the address displayed in a flyaway like a popup on the page.

8] Developer tool – It’s also a very cool tool. It is kind of combination of Firebug plug-in and browser tools of HTML Editors like Dreamweaver also combining accessibility check options. (Need a brief and separate article on this separately).

Why compel user for that extra click ?

Recently I visited one leading Movie website - bollywoodhungama.com (formerly Indiafm.com). In the top section apart from banner, login area they are having area for latest bollywood news section. Flash File is being used to display the news titles.  The flash file is displaying nine (9) news titles in the right side and the left portion is displaying the graphical snapshot of that news. The left section content changes as the focus is keep changing from one news item to the next one. So at any given point of time only one news item will be highlighted and its related image will be displayed in the left section.

Interaction flow for the user to read any news item is to first click on the news item, the left section will change. In the left section along with graphics, there is an action button (Click here), on click of which the news opens up in the parent window replacing the current screen.

Bollywood Hungama
Issue: From users perspective this interaction is not user friendly. To read multiple news items, user will need to perform many extra clicks which should be avoided.

  • User will need to click on the first news item he/she wants to read.
  • User will need to click on the Click Here button to open that news item in the current window.
  • As in the opened news window, news items are not displayed, hence if the user wants to read another news item, it will require to click on home page to open home page in the current window and again repeat the process by clicking a news item and then click here button.
  • Here the user is being forced to open home page again and again, from hit counters perspective it may be a good idea as it will fetch more user clicks, but from users point of view it is cumbersome.

Solution: If this issue is due to an oversight, it may need correction.  Some options are:-

  • Display the news links in the subsequent pages as well
  • Allow the user to open the news items in new tab/window
  • On click open the news item in a new tab/window.

For any public domain site good user experience is always a desired thing. With bad user experience, user will avoid using that feature in future. User should not be compelled  to perform extra click if it is not critical.

Scroll Wheel

A scroll wheel (or mouse wheel) is a hard plastic or rubbery disc (the “wheel”) on a computer mouse that is perpendicular to the mouse surface. It is normally located between the left and right mouse buttons.

We are using the left mouse button to initiate an action and with right mouse button, we opens up the context menu. Scroll Wheel is being used to scroll down the page.

Actually, I was not aware that this scroll wheel can also be used to open a link in a new tab. While browsing the net, If I had to open a link in a new tab of the same browser window, my action sequence was like - click the right mouse button and from the context menu select open in a new tab action item.

Here scroll wheel can be very useful, in IE 7 (not tried with other browsers) if you click the scroll whell over the link you want to open, it will open the page in a new tab and thus reducing your number of click for this frequent action. I think this is good.

Things I don’t like about Linked In and Twitter

I am a regular user of Linked In and Twitter   site and really enjoy my browsing these sites but I dislike one thing for sure in both these site is the way they handle user login process.

I am sure there must be so many new users might be joining these site everyday but what about the existing users.

In the Linked In landing page they are not providing direct access to login area. If you are a registered user, you need to click on Sign In link appeared twice on the page to open the sign in page and then you can sign in with your credentials, why this hack ? why not let registed user sign in at landing page only?

Linked In Landing Page

In Twitter also at first glance you are not getting anything for login if you are a registered user. Thre is a link top right, which allow you to open login popup on mouse click and from there you can login into your account. Why they can not display the user login upfront? Not sure what purpose it is solving here.

Twitter Landing Page

Twitter Login Area

This is the area where I like Facebook a lot more because of their smart way of handling login process. In the landing page it self, at the top section you are getting login section where as down under you are getting easy registration option.
